One day, there was a little girl. Her parents were killed in a house fire. She jumped out of her bedroom window. She wandered about lost. She came upon a little shack. She found food, water, and warm blankets inside. Then, out of the blue, a man wandered in. He told her not to be afraid. I am a doctor, he said. My name is Donald, and who do we have here? My name is Ellen, she replied. Are you lost, asked Donald. Yes, I am, replied Ellen. My house caught fire and I jumped out of a three story window. Are you hurt, asked Donald. Well, I really don't know. My whole body is sore and burning. He told her to lie down and he would check her. He found burns and scrapes all over her. He asked, how she wound up at the shack. She replied, I wandered off and came upon it.How old are you, Ellen? I am five. Where are your parents? They were killed by the fire. Well, Ellen, you need to be taken to a hospital.
When they arrived at the hospital, Donald told the nurse what happened and where he found Ellen. He told her about the burns and scrapes on her. The nurse replied, so this is the missing little girl, everyone has been looking for. They looked at her injuries and cleaned them up. The nurse called the police told them that the little girl had been brought in for burns and scrapes. When the police arrived, Donald and Ellen were sitting in the lobby. They talked to the police and the doctor told them that Ellen could stay with him and his wife for as long as she wanted to. The police agreed to let Ellen stay with Donald and his wife. Ellen went home with Donald. They sat up all night talking about her. She asked, where is your wife? She is on a business trip. She is to be home later today. Ellen told Donald, she hadn't started school yet. She wanted to, but, she had to wait until next year. I just turned five a month ago. There really isn't that much to tell about my life. My parents were lawyers. My mom worked on divorce cases and dad did accident cases. We weren't poor, but, we weren't rich either.
The doctors wife arrived home from France. She was very surprised when she walked in the kitchen. The two of them were sitting at the table laughing and talking. Hi, Jesse, said Donald. This is Ellen. Nice to meet you, Ellen, said Jesse. Nice to meet you too, Jesse. Donald told Jesse about Ellen's parents and the fire.Donald mentioned, what he had told the police to Jesse. Jesse sat down and told how sorry she was about her parents and the fire. I'm glad you did that, Donald, said Jesse. Ellen, agreed. Jesse asked Ellen what she liked to do for fun. Ellen replied, I like to play games, go out to the park and play with my friends. I miss my friends allot. I need to go home and see what is left that is good. We can take you later today. Right now,I think you need to get some rest. Ellen agreed and they went upstairs and got her room ready. Ellen fell asleep fast. She new she was safe now.Donald and Jesse went back downstairs and discusses plans for Ellen.
Donald and Jesse went down to social services, to talk about becoming her foster parents. Meanwhile, their neighbor, was waiting at their house, keeping an eye on Ellen. Ellen woke up and went downstairs and found the neighbor there. She started screaming and ran back upstairs. The neighbor ran after her. She went into her room and saw Ellen sitting there scared. She gently told Ellen who she was and why she was there. Ellen apologized and said nice to meet you, Mrs. Holden.Mrs. Holden, in return, said nice to meet you too, Ellen. Do you like staying with Donald and Jesse? Yes, I do, replied Ellen. They remind me of my parents. I know, I just met them, but, they have been so nice to me, I want to stay with them forever. They really like you too, said Mrs. Holden.
Meanwhile, back at social services, it is agreed, that Donald and Jesse are to be Ellen's foster parents. Donald and Jesse were very happy. They go home to tell Ellen the good news. They thank Mrs. Holden for staying with Ellen. Mrs. Holden left with a smile. Donald, Jesse, and Ellen go out for dinner to celebrate the good news. They were laughing and talking about Ellen's new life. Jesse started talking about going shopping for new clothes and other things. Ellen totally forgot about the fire, but, she didn't forget her parents. That was what Donald and Jesse wanted. They wanted her to remember her parents and forget the fire. They wanted her to laugh and live again.
Everything worked out for Ellen. She was finally adopted by Donald and Jesse. Ellen and Jesse became real close. They talked about their problems everyday. Donald and Jesse also became closer. They now had a family. This family grew closer and closer together. Ellen didn't forget her parents, but, she was very thankful that Donald and Jesse were her new parents.
